Government
|
Feudal. Practically speaking, Kakehun's king was the leader of a great nomadic tribe of horsemen who, over time, have also built a few cities and towns on the northern steppes. The economic base is still largely nomadic herdsmen who move with the changing of the seasons to the best pastures. It is not, as a result, a wealthy kingdom.
Yet the horses are the best in the land…descending from the legendary Horses of Tholl that are mentioned in the Codex of Breminor. The king considers himself the protector of these horses and only allows them to be sold to owners who he knows will care for them, and only then when the kingdom needs money.
There are three great forests in Kakehun: Immerdarke, the Thogule Morreth, and the Glourwoode. Immerdarke is inhabited by Elves who are friends to the king and pay regular tribute to him as both honored one and protector. The Thogule Morreth is actually many different forests, all separated by the many rivers, like the Crystal, that find their birthplace in Kakehun. Many nomadic towns make their regular winter stay within the Moreth, both for its protection from the winds on the steppes and the game that can be found there. The Glourwoode is a dark, treacherous place and is avoided by Elves. Aside from the few nomadic towns that occasionally make their path through the forest, few enter the there.

Trade
|
Kakehun is far from the center of the world (Sea of Tala) where most of the world's trade occurs. Still, it has some unique resources that draw adventurous merchants to them. Many of these merchants find an environment different, and in many ways better than the hectic ones of the bustling cities of Eslebi. As a result, most of Kakehun's merchant class is made up of former citizens of Eslebi.
There are few of the old imperial roads left in Kakehun. In much of the kingdom, what passes for a “road” is a hard-packed path that may wash out during the late winter-early spring. These roads are quite safe, however, with the military providing regular patrols and support to regular caravans crossing the country. All of the kingdom's trade occurs overland. Its major trading partners are Eslebi, Valithra and Toroth.

Unusual Laws and customs
|
Slavery is illegal in Kakehun.
Horses may not be ridden on Archin's Feast (punishable by death). Harming a horse is punishable by a whipping; killing a horse is punishable by death.
Among the nomadic Human clans of Kakehun, your value to the clan is judged by your ability on horseback. Only three kinds of people cannot ride among the clans: babies, invalids and the elderly. Babies are carried by their mothers. It is up to a person to judge when they become a burden to the clan and end his/her life with grace. Persons doing so are revered by their clan. Men and women are married on horseback.
Kakehans greet each other with their weapon hand raised at the elbow and palm facing the person they are greeting.

Notes
|
Visitors are judged by their ability to ride a horse. If you cannot ride, you have no worth and will not be spoken to, invited into a Kakehun home or fed. Because of their unique relationship with the elves of the Immerdarke, this rule does not apply to elves or half-elves.
