Purpose/focus
To know the texts - to write the texts.  The Sontor are the scribes of the land.  They are also the guardians of the ancient texts and the Codex, typically fulfilling the role of librarian as well as scribe.  
A Sontor's alignment, perspective on the world and character of their likely employer is determined by the first text to which they are exposed.   This formative document is known as the “Awakening Text” for it will dictate a scribe's particular approach to the texts and life in general.

Any Lawful.

Hierarchy
Scribes tend to be organized around libraries or their employer.  Those that have official library function are normally found in centers of learning (usually run by the Sontor) supported by the court.  Other scribes will typically be found in the employ of merchants and others who need to keep records.

Composition
Any.  There are scribes among the three main races.  There are also scribes among the gnomes and halflings.  The Half-Orc tend to view texts as valueless extra baggage and the written word as generally suspect.

Recruitment
Mentor-student relationship, usually local in nature.

Degree of secrecy
None.
Popularity
Of relatively little interest to the general populace.  Considered to be of significant value to the political and economic elite of the land.
